The region of Emilia Romagna is truly a unique luxury vacation destination comprised of some of the most fascinating cities and towns Italy has to offer. Emilia Romagna is bordered to the East by the warm, inviting Adriatic Sea and to the North by the picturesque River Po. To Emilia Romagna's South is the Apennine Range. Geographically, Emilia Romagna is a lovely destination that is, overall, far less visited than its more heavily tourism-concentrated neighbors, thus providing a welcoming hospitable destination for each one of its guests.
Bologna, Emilia Romagna’s capital, fills its role nicely. Here, one finds a fascinating, warm and enchanting destination bearing superlatives indicative of its superb offerings. Bologna is known as la Grassa, la Dota, and la Rossa- three nicknames that give great insight into the city. La Grassa, or the Fat, describes the incredible dining one will experience here in Bologna. La Dotta refers to the town's scholarly reputation, accurately attributed as Bologna is one of THE university cities of the world, an academic mecca. Finally, la Rossa describes two of the region's well known aspects: its lovely red, terracotta colored roofs, and/or its past political leftist leanings… either way Bologna is a lovely treasure of Emilia Romagna.
Looking into other character- rich cities of the region, one must acknowledge Ravenna- a truly unusual town. Here, the town’s atmosphere is best absorbed by means of a leisurely stroll throughout- with surprises around every turn, an exploration of Ravenna is highly enjoyable- here one finds fantastic historical masterpieces including the late 15th century Basilica of San Apollinare Nuovo where Roman and Byzantine styles combine to create a truly captivating structure. Dante’s tomb can be found here as well.
More of Emilia Romagna’s delightful cities include Modena with its 12th century cathedral (Duomo) within the heart of a medieval core of streets. Ferrara is darling, full of history and boasting a fantastic castle, straight out of a storybook. Emilia Romagna’s city of Parma has the highest living standard in all of Italy and offers some wonderful food (Parma ham and Parmesan cheese, anyone?) Last, but not least Rimini, the vacation destination for Italians, is a glorious seaside resort town along the warm, pleasantly soothing sea of the Adriatic. And to think, all of this is only an appetizer, the full course of Emilia Romagna patiently awaits, ready to cordially greet cherished visitors upon arrival.
