Genoa, a port city located on the coast of Liguria in Italy’s northwest, is a pleasant surprise for each of its visitors: full of enchanting architecture, delightful cuisine, and marvelous sights. At one time, Genoa was the most powerful port city in all of Europe, and these days, although this grandeur seems to have faded, hints of the refinement and luxury the city once enjoyed can be found, validating the success of this once cosmopolitan, independent, rich maritime republic.
Genoa is a city to worth wandering throughout, like the alleys of Venice. The best way to experience Genoa is to allow oneself to lose one’s way, to follow the winding streets and to become immersed in the architecture while imagining what these structures had resembled in their glory days. The streets, characteristic of Genoa, called either vicoli or carugi, are narrow, mazelike, and full of historical treasures. These streets go hand in hand with the palazzi that line them. Having been built in the seventeenth century for the premier families of Genoa at the town’s most successful period, these avenues rivaled some of Europe’s most exclusive. One of these formerly exclusive Genovese streets, Via Garibaldi, provides a glimpse into the city’s seventeenth century past with it’s former palazzi - Rosso, Bianco, Grimaldi and Reale. Palazzo Rosso has been transformed into a museum.
One of the town’s main attractions is the Acquario di Genova (or Genoa Aquarium) where one can find the largest collection of Marine life in Europe. Other notable buildings are the Cathedral of San Lorenzo which had been rebuilt in 1100, the palace of the doges, and the medieval Church of San Donato.
The cuisine of Genoa is perhaps the city's most impressive accomplishment these days; here, one will be sure to find delicious, hearty genuinely Italian meals- ranging from the most divine pesto dishes (a sauce made with basil) - to Pansotti al Sugo di Nocci (a pasta sauce with walnut sauce)- to Farinata (a chickpea flour type of bread) - to the most savory cakes including Torta pasqualina- (cake of Easter).
Be sure to experience for yourself all of Genoa's hidden treasures- we can't wait to hear all about it!
