L’Aquila is a charming city, to the northeast of Rome, nestled comfortably within a valley. Based at the foot of Gran Sasso, the highest peak of the Apennines, this lovely town displays a rich heritage of an intriguing medieval past. A great sense of this history can be experienced through visiting the well preserved churches, monuments, museums and castle. This provides a more than adequate flavor of the depth of L’Aquila. One of the L’Aquila’s most well known sites, a signature point of the city is the Fountain of Ninety-nine Spouts or Fontanelle delle Novantanove Cannelle. This historic monument commemorates the ninety nine villages that Frederick II had unified when he founded L’Aquila in 1240.

Another wonderful key site of L’Aquila include Santa Maria di Collemaggio, an enchanting church with a beautiful pink and white façade. Within the church, 14th century frescoes can be found as well as a regal and opulent pure gothic interior. One can also find a perfectly preserved castle in L’Aquila. Constructed in the 16th century under the orders of Filiberto of Orange, the castle’s main purpose was to serve as a point of authority from which to control the citizens.
This is only a small taste of the treasures within this unique Italian city. Exploring the region will provide a much stronger appreciation for the fascination events that helped shape this region.
