A busy port city situated on the north western coast of the island of Sicily, Palermo is blessed with a deeply rich history as well as true architectural beauty. As the capital city of Sicily, Palermo finds within, its own type of capital: the 700 year old Vucciria- within the very center of Palermo’s old city. Strongly indicative of the Palermo style of life, the market is a true glimpse into the fast, exciting city. Here fisherman bring in the day’s catch and vendors set up crates of the freshest fruits and vegetables, vast choices of pastas, grains and herbs, as well as the most delicious and tantalizing fried delicacies and hundreds of various specialty items. The market of Palermo is known as Ballaro and stretches from the heart of the Albergheria neighborhood to the square that lies before the Church of Carmine.
The city of Palermo is surrounded by a sparkling sea. It is full of incredible examples of Arabic and Norman art, thus making it a spectacular cultural destination. The city’s history is richly complex and truly fascinating- all those who visit are strongly encouraged to delve a bit into the rich traditions and enthralling events that helped shaped this superbly unique locale. Fantastic starting places to do so include the city’s Norman Cattedrale and the Sacraceb-Norman-Spanish Palazzo Reale, formerly a royal palace that was embellished and changed over the centuries and is now the local parliament’s seat. More of Palermo’s sites include, La Martorana a superbly designed Baroque church complete with a lovely facade and the Teatro Massimo, founded in 1897 and well known in the US as the setting for the climax scene of Godfather III. The city of Palermo is divided into sections including the medieval core and the new city. The heart of all this are the squares of Piazza Castelnuovo and Piazza Ruggero Séttimo. Viale della Libertà is Palermo’s most upscale street, full of tempting dining, galleries, and alluring boutiques.
