Umbria stretches out like a promised land, with the warmest of countrysides, the most charming of villages, and sites so intriguing
one will wonder how it is they had not heard of them prior to their discovery. This euphorically tranquil region, bordering the much more heavily frequented Tuscany, is the lesser known gem of the Northern/Central region of Italy. In lovely Umbria, one finds treasures throughout- displayed for the visitor’s pleasure in the most modest of ways. This humbleness is one of Umbria’s most endearing characteristics, as it is filled to the brim with breathtaking sites and richly historical landmarks- yet does not boast of these treasures. Umbria merely waits patiently for those willing to venture forth to discover them.
Treasures of Umbria include the enchanting medieval town of Assisi, with its gorgeous basilica and monastery of St. Francis where this well known saint now lies. The basilica is embellished with works by artistic master Giotto, who was one many of Italy’s finest artists attracted to Umbria's deeply religious heritage. Cimabue visited as well, as did Tuscan painter, Fra Filippo Lippi who created a number of noteworthy Quattrocento (fifteenth century) paintings.
With all of these impeccably planned, fantastically characteristic cities, one of Umbria’s most fulfilling activities is simply renting a car and setting out on a mission into the unknown (or semi-known with the help of a map!) Exploring the region, one will find a rich Etruscan history as well as a majestic medieval legacy expressed through castles, fortresses, and grandiose towers that remain, in marvelous condition. The region's capital, Perugia, is another secret treasure, home to one of the finest bakeries in the land as well as Rocca Paolina, Italy’s largest fortress. A visit to Spoleto, one of Umbria's most beautiful hill towns, reveals a Duomo where the works of Fra Lippi grace the interior. The Ponte Torri here is a sight to behold, a magnificent 14th century aqueduct offering fantastic views.
The town of Gubbio is a treasure in and of itself, with it’s incredibly preserved Roman Amphitheater, not to mention its maiolica ceramics for which it is well known, it is guaranteed to be a stop worth while. Lake Trasimeno, Italy’s fourth largest lake awaits as well, where one can enjoy a boat jaunt out to one of the lake’s islands, beautiful Isola Maggiore; a gorgeous site to behold. The neighboring town of Castiglione del Lago is a pleasure as well.
