A truly mountainous region, Basilicata is a conundrum to those trying to make sense of it: Basilicata is free of tourists and filled with spectacular sites that wait patiently to be visited by those inquisitive explorers willing to appreciate this region for all it has to offer. Called the only secret region left of Italy, this unique and wonderful destination offers a range of archeological sites, medieval cities, divine churches, Renaissance era frescoes, and fantastic gourmet cuisine.

Located between Apulia and Calabria, known as the “instep of the boot” Basilicata hosts a variety of dramatic landscapes, changing significantly as one travels from one region to another - including coastlines backed by bare mountainsides sloping down to the sea, as well as moon-like dry regions housing some of Basilicata’s most cherished residents: its architectural and artistic wonders.

Matera is one of the most legendary cities of Basilicata; where the “Sassi” a city carved out of rock (now a UNESCO- listed World Heritage Site) can be witnessed.  Here, caves and underground architectural structures connect to one another by steps carved into the cliffs, enclosed with dry-stone walls.  In Matera, a plethora of churches can be found, some of which are appointed with Byzantine décor as well as frescoes.  Churches worthy of a visit include Santa Maria della Valle, Santa Maria delle Virtù, the white stone catherdral of Vaglia Quarreys, and so many more.
