Upon the toe of Italy's boot, one can find the moderately visited, mountainous region known as Calabria. Here one can find ancient artifacts of Riace bronze statues dating back to years ago, nearly 2,500, when Calabria had been a part of the site of Magna Graecia, home to rich and powerful Greek colonies. This region, a peninsula which lies along the Tyrrhenian and Ionian coasts, stretches endlessly along the seaside, providing the most incredible variety of panoramas including the rugged rocky coves, to vast soft beaches adorning the turquoise sea. As one travels inland, it is quickly noted that Calabria is sprinkled with tiny, colorful villages clinging to the sloping hillsides. Calabria's vast landscape also includes more mountainous regions full of attractions. Here one finds plenty to see at Gambarie, on Aspromonte, and in the Sila villages where one finds a host of quaint, traditionally rich towns. The Sila, mentioned previously, is a high plain embellished with sparkling lakes, wooded sections, and vast rolling hills, where hiking opportunities are many. On the contrary, the Aspromante forms a rocky spine for Calabria, sheltering the region as it is framed by the sea on three sides. Beaches in Calabria are particularly noteworthy as is the Museo Nazionale of Reggio di Calbria.
