As the capital of the Molise region, Campobasso is a lovely destination that is sure to be a great surprise to visitors, as a vacation to this region will be full of wonderful sites and memorable experiences. Located in the Biferno river basin and framed by the lovely Sannio and Matese mountains, Campobasso is geographically superb.  This seems to be no secret; however as Campobasso’s history is extremely rich and varied from previous inhabitants, to which the region’s architecture and archeological splendors attest.

Wondrous sites of Campobasso include Castello Monforte which was constructed in 1450 and where ancient settlements of the Samnite culture can be found as well.  Another fabulous site is the Chiesa della Madonna del Monte. Located next to the castle, the church was originally built in the 11^th century and was later rebuilt in 1525.  At the foot of the castle, one finds another church which is the Church of Saint George, which is most likely Campobasso’s most ancient, having been built around the year 1000AD over the ruins of a Pagan temple.  The excellent façade of both Gothic and Romanesque elements belongs to the church of San Leonardo.  The church of San Bartolomeo is entirely in the Romanesque form and was constructed in the 11^th century, made from limestone.
