Catanzaro, the capital city of Calabria- the toe of Italy's boot is a truly fascinating destination. What makes this destination truly unique is a rich and diverse history that can be attested to by incredible stuctures, churches and traditions throughout the region. The city of Catanzaro rises on a rock and is divided into two sections by the deep Fiumarella Valley. Connecting these two parts is the Viadotto Morandi, an immense concrete and steel bridge. The city also has a coastal region, Catanzaro Lido, along the Ionian coast where one can swim, sail and scuba dive. One intriguing aspect of Catanzaro is the role of geography in shaping of the city's historical events and cultural life.
On the top of the highest of Catanzaro’s hills is a castle constructed in 1060 by Roberto il Guidscardo, a Norman conqueror. Further down the hill, one finds the “old town” where churches have been structured in the Baroque style. Of these churches, one finds the Monte dei Morti, the Chiesa di Santissima Rosario, the Chiesa san Giovanni, and the Chiesa d’Osservanza. Embellishing the Chiesa d’Osservanza is a collection of frescoes and paintings completed in the 16th century. Here as well, one can also find the fascinating Madonna della Grazie which was completed by Antonello Gagini.
For those who love to witness a true Italian festival, there are a few days throughout the year, where the Catanzarese (Catanzaro citizens) celebrate. During Easter, A Naca occurs, a Good Friday procession where the locals don biblical attire and act out the Stages of the Cross. July is the time for the Feast of the Sailors’ Madonna festival where a statue of the Madonna floats throughout town on a “barge” amidst a host of other festively descorated “boats”. A third Catanzaro event takes place in the month of August, during the first 10 days. During this time fantastic products and produce from throughout the Catanzaro province are sold for a week.
The true enjoyment of Catanzaro comes from the appreciation of the capital city’s vast history and contributions dating back to ancient times. In addition, the province also provides a captivating glimpse into traditional Calabria for those who decide to visit nearby villages and towns.
