Portofino, Italy is a tiny, incredibly beautiful fishing village nestled into the base of cliffs, in one of the Italian Riviera's most picturesque ports. Frequented by vacationers and celebrities from all over the world, Portofino is one of the most famous Italian Riviera hot spots to visit. The lovely setting and the warm, sunny climate of the Italian Riviera makes Portofino a truly a remarkable destination for an Italy vacation. One of Portofino's features, for which it may be known best, are the historical and meticulously preserved, fisherman’s dwellings with their colorful facades. Now inhabited by celebrities and the social elite, this classy resort village lies tucked securely into the side of a small promontory which forms a miniscule, yet naturally-deep water harbor that had been loved by the ancient Romans who thus named it Portus Delphini, or dolphin’s harbor. From that ancient nickname eventually developed the moniker, Portofino.

Today, Portofino's miniature bay teems with boats: ranging from stunning yachts to sporty pleasure boats, to fishing boats which seem to hold tribute to the village's traditions of previous years. In terms of Portofino's hotel accommodations, although selections in Portofino are limited, there are a handful of wonderful luxury accommodations in the form of both villas and stunning hotels. Dining in Portofino is superb, with the local specialty being tantalizing seafood dishes, along with a delicious pasta topping: an utterly divine pesto sauce (a mixture of olive oil, basil along with other herbs, a taste of garlic, a sprinkling of cheese -either pecorino or parmesan, and a handful of finely ground pine nuts.)
For the active trekkers, there is a dramatic and stunning trail that connects Portofino to the nearby town of San Fruttuoso. Here, well-kept footpaths, lead alongside Santa Margherita Ligure's tromp l’oeil facades, affording hikers the most extraordinary views. If a near- two mile trek sounds like a bit too much exertion during an Italy vacation, a more leisurely option is offered by Portofino’s Via Roma where, high-end fashion boutiques, exquisite jewelry shops and alluring art galleries, line the flagstone streets. Another relaxing choice involves strolling from the town’s square (the Piazzetta) uphill towards the charming and delightful Church of San Giorgio. From there, one can arrive at a spectacular lookout point at Portofino’s Punto del Capo where the Portofino lighthouse awaits.
