Venice is a truly magnificent place in every sense of the word. A place that can be referred to as being one that is unique. Although unique doesn’t even begin to describe it, Venice is a magical city, one where it seems as if anything can happen. Perhaps that sense is derived from the fact that the streets of this incredible locale are filled with water- and boats are the primary method of transportation. Perhaps the city lends this perception because it so closely resembles a dream- only to be found in one’s most imaginative fantasies. The architecture alone of Venice is in a category all by itself, surely out of the realm of one dreamer alone.
From the very moment one enters the city, viewing a vaporetto, or water taxi zooming by (#1 is best for sightseeing along the Grand Canal), it is understood that an excellent experience will be had- full of fun and mystery. Along the waterways of the canals, a host of palaces align, constructed as far back as five centuries ago- all continuing to bear the name of a great Venetian family. Immediately, one will also take notice of the fantastic Rialto bridge spanning the canal in the city’s commercial heart- here one finds a heavenly photo op and an even better opportunity to take in all of Venice’s action.
In terms of Venice's architectural wonders, no trip is complete without witnessing San Marco's Square- or St. Mark's Square- here one finds pure beauty. The church itself is a marvel- blending architectural styles of East and West- it's exterior boasting riches from its Republic's overseas empires. From 1075 on, a law for returning sailors decreed that all returning ships must bring back a precious contribution to adorn the "House of St. Mark." The church had been used as the doge's (Venetian ruler) personal chapel until 1807, when it was than deemed a cathedral of Venice. The inside, with its gleaming gold mosaics, exquisitely embellished cupolas and Byzantine masterpieces, is incredible. The Palazzo Ducale (or doge's palace) is fantastic as well, constructed with a pink Veronese marble exterior and a lovely interior including the Sala del Maggior Consiglio (a vast hall for the members of the Great Council) of extravagant design.
That is only the smallest hint of what Venice has to offer- boat rides to Murano- where one can find glassmaking extraordinaires and Burono- an island of their lace-making counterparts, the island of Lido, and so much more. And take note- all of these highlights were discussed without even mentioning the gondola rides!
